This week I am planning on doing a camshaft swap in my Camaro. I have to admit I haven't been terribly happy with how the car is working. The thing is... what isn't right is all intuitive. It's a style issue... how does the cam impact style?
Since I installed the fuel injection it cruises nice. It drives much more easily. It's less tempermental. It makes the most power over the carbs I have had in the past. So WHY is it not making me happy? It runs so smooth and nice...
Well...
The last few times I have taken it out I had felt like it's roaring and snarling a lot more than the show it's putting on should allow. Making a right turn the last time I drove it i had waited for a car to pass before I merge into traffic and then I stand on the gas and all that fire breathing roaring and snarling grunt and full on assault on the senses and then I realize "I just caught up to this guy in the Kia. All that and this is how far I've come?"
It sort of felt like everyone around me must have been thinking "That's a lot of drama for nothin'."
Truth be told the cam in the car now is a relic from my high school days when it was all "Bigger is BETTER!" so I stuffed the biggest cam I could and the bigger the cam the more power on the top end you get. But while horsepower sells cars, torque wins races and this cam just isn't a torque cam. So I ordered a new one. Much MUCH more mordern 262 duration intake and a 270 exhaust with a slower closing ramp to be more gentle on the valves. I should gain some spunk from it, bit better fuel economy, and the fuel injection wont get confused every time I stand on the go pedal and my vacuum dips below 8 inches. It wii FEEL more powerful and the power curve is more in my driving style. There's even slight variances in each individual lobe to compensate for intake runners and exhaust tubes not being the exactly length. Much more efficient.
at least on paper.
I havent told anyone I am on vacation next week. It's gonna be my ME time! Me, the Camaro, make it faster and if I have sme time fix a few other things.
Then it's just a matter of  taking a good friend of mine here to do the fabrication  I need on the exhaust. He's notoriously hard to get together with... but maybe if I make him an offer he wouldn't DARE refuse...
So I think Monday it begins.

If memory serves, that means you're taking ~30-degrees of advertised duration out of it... should be a whole different animal altogether. What's the compression ratio, combo, and before/after cam, dude? I'll run some numbers here that predict results/changes pretty good. Happy bump stickin'
